Japanese Facilities in the Columbus Region
Friendship City Program
In 2012, we began a journey to strengthen our community’s ties with Japan. With our close ties to Honda and with our numerous Japanese companies, we eagerly began a journey to strengthen our community’s ties with Japan in December 2013 with the signing of a Friendship Declaration Agreement with Yorii-machi, Japan.

Friendship Garden
In 2015, the City of Marysville completed Partners Park in Uptown Marysville which included a Friendship Garden. The Friendship Garden was sponsored by Honda of America Mfg., Inc. and included a Japanese stone and Cherry Tree, both donated by the citizens of Yorii-machi.
Special Gift to Yorii-machi
To honor our relationship with Yorii-machi, the Marysville-Yorii Friendship Committee worked with Honda of America Mfg., Inc., Tool Technologies, Celebrity, Quantum Technologies, Nissin International Transport, and Marysville EVSD to create a 3D printed Pottersburg Covered Bridge replica as a gift to the citizens of Yorii-machi. The gift was delivered in-person to Yorii-machi City officials.
Student Exchange & Language Learning
The Columbus Japanese Language School (コロンバス日本語補習校) is a nonprofit Saturday supplemental school serving families in the region. Utilizing authentic Japanese textbooks, teaching styles, and cultural practices, the school operates with Saturday classes held at Creekview Intermediate School in Marysville and its office located in Worthington. Students learn Japanese language, culture, and customs. The school supports approximately 550 students from elementary to secondary levels.

Japanese Language Program
Marysville Exempted Village School District (MEVSD) began its first Japanese language program during the 2014-2015 school year. The program has since grown to the largest in Ohio.
Student Exchange Program
In 2015, seven Marysville students travelled to Yorii-machi, beginning the Marysville-Yorii Student Exchange Program. Since then, students have traveled to Yorii-machi in 2017, 2019 and 2024, while students from Yorii-machi have traveled to Marysville in 2016, 2018 and 2023.
Columbus Japanese Language School (CJLS):
Since September 2021, the CJLS Marysville schools has hosted their Saturday school. The 40-year-old program brings over 400 students to the Marysville campus.
Japanese Business Relationship
Union County is a hub for business growth, offering strategic reinvestment programs and incentives that drive innovation, job creation, and economic expansion. With a pro-business environment, strong community partnerships, and targeted financial support, Union County provides the resources companies need to invest, grow, and succeed.

Japanese Business Missions
City of Marysville and County representatives travel to Japan biennially to meet with the parent companies of Japanese-owned facilities operating in Union County. The mission also includes goodwill visit to Yorii-machi and attendance at the Midwest U.S. – Japan Association Conference. Visits have occurred to Japan in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2023.
Ohio Communities in Support of Japanese Investment:
In 2020, we teamed up with Logan, Miami, and Shelby Counties to begin quarterly meetings to share ideas, programs and resources.

Tap into local, regional, and international organizations that support Union County’s strong ties with Japan. These groups offer resources for business, cultural exchange, education, and community connections.

JASCO: Japan America Society of Central Ohio
The Japan-America Society of Central Ohio (JASCO) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to connecting Japanese and American communities in Central Ohio. With a mission centered on cultural exchange, education, and business outreach, JASCO hosts signature events such as the Ohio Speech Contest, the Ohio Japan Bowl, and the beloved annual summer festival, Japan FestOH!. JASCO offers adult language courses in Japanese, business seminars, and language meet-ups to promote cross-cultural communication.

JETRO: Japan External Trade Organization
The Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) is a government-related nonprofit that offers pathways for investment and collaborations with Japan. JETRO specializes in promoting inbound investment into Japan, supporting Japanese businesses in global markets, and providing trade and business services. Through market research, trade fairs, seminars, business matching, and industry events, JETRO connects international companies with opportunities in Japan.

COJAC: Central Ohio Japanese Association of Commerce
Central Ohio Japanese Association of Commerce (COJAC) is a nonprofit community organization that facilitates information exchange, business networking, and mutual assistance. COJAC hosts a variety of community-focused events, from traditional Japanese celebrations like mochitsuki (rice cake pounding) to casual gatherings like golfing, picnics, and seasonal fruit-picking. In partnership with the Consulate-General of Japan in Detroit, COJAC also organizes periodic consular outreach services (領事出張サービス) in the Columbus area. These events offer convenient local access to services such as passport applications and other official documentation.

GCSCI: Greater Columbus Sister Cities International
Greater Columbus Sister Cities International (GCSCI) connects Columbus with ten sister cities around the world. Through cultural programming, GCSCI brings international art, food, and traditions to the Columbus Region. GCSCI offers education and youth initiatives such as student exchanges, delegations, and the CIRCLE leadership program.For professionals and businesses, GCSCI facilitates international trade missions, economic partnerships, and networking opportunities. By combining culture, education, business, and community resources, GCSCI helps position Columbus as a vibrant international city.

Consulate-General of Japan in Detroit
Consulate-General of Japan in Detroit serves as the primary diplomatic and consular office for Michigan and Ohio, including Columbus, as there is no consulate located directly in our state. Located in the GM Renaissance Center in downtown Detroit, it provides services such as visa application processing, passport and travel document issuance, notarial services, and civil registrations. The Consulate also actively supports cultural and educational ties between Japan and Ohio. Its jurisdiction includes coordination with Honorary Consul David W. Cook in Columbus, who promotes U.S.–Japan relations and assists local Japanese residents.

XpatHomes streamlines the rental process and provides a manual explaining the local housing market. By providing a safe and comfortable environment, XpatHomes supports Japanese and Korean companies and contribute to the economic development of the local community.
